Supporting Children with Complex Medical Needs: The Role of Social Workers and Medical Nurses in Pediatric Care
Abstract
Children with complex medical needs (CMN) face significant challenges requiring multidisciplinary care to address their diverse medical, emotional, and social requirements. These children often present with chronic, severe, or multiple health conditions that necessitate long-term healthcare interventions, including specialized medical treatment and psychosocial support. This article explores the critical roles that medical nurses and social workers play in the care of children with CMN. Nurses manage the medical aspects of care, such as medication administration, health monitoring, and family education, while social workers provide emotional support, assist with resource coordination, and help families navigate the healthcare system. The collaboration between these professionals is essential for delivering holistic, family-centered care. Best practices for supporting CMN children include integrated care models, continuous education, and cultural competence.
Despite the challenges, including resource limitations and family stress, the combined efforts of nurses and social workers improve the health outcomes and quality of life for children with CMN. Case studies exemplify the success of interdisciplinary approaches, highlighting the positive impact of collaboration. As medical technology advances and healthcare systems become more integrated, the roles of medical nurses and social workers will continue to evolve, ensuring the provision of comprehensive care for children with complex medical needs.
